Rights Respecting School
At Springside School the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child is reflected in the school ethos and curriculum and is demonstrated by all staff. On the 20th November 1989 the countries across the world made a promise to all children across the Earth. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child is an internationally recognised statement of all of those promises.
The principles of the UNCRC are:
- non-discrimination
- devotion to the best interests of the child
- the right to life, survival and development
- respect for the views of the child
Using the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child as a foundation provides a values framework that supports and guides the adults working in our school community and puts the child at the centre of everything we do. The learners at Springside learn about themselves, and others, and their learning is widened to include an awareness of their community and extended to the wider world. They learn about their rights as a rights' holder, through a practise which reflects their rights and of ways in which they can be involved in supporting rights for all children.
We work with all members of the school community to learn about the UNCRC and to develop ways in which we can actively support all children to have their rights met. All teaching, support and lunchtime staff have received training on the UNCRC and fully understand the importance of their role as duty bearers to our learners and children across the world.
All of our classes across school have each devised their own class charters which are carefully thought out by the class team to be purposeful and meaningful to each individual classes current learning journey and reflective of the needs within the class. We also have a whole school charter which is our agreement of our expectations of how every member of our school community must be rights respecting.
